As a dairyman, David Valadao has endeared himself to the agricultural communities, even building cross-party support among Democrats. But with costs soaring and Trump so unpopular, voters might not be as willing to look beyond the “R” beside his name.

The bill establishes over $24 million in ongoing annual funding to support small and mid-sized farmers who supply fresh produce to public school classrooms. The goal is to strengthen regional food systems and expand nutrition education.

Governor Gavin Newsom approved $15 million to temporarily replace the federal Local Food Assistance Program (LFPA) that helped schools and food banks buy directly from small farms.
