HOME GROUND

Cervantes was born on October 24, 1987, and raised in Riverside County. Her father, Greg, previously served as mayor of Coachella, and her sister, Clarissa, serves on the Riverside City Council. Cervantes earned her bachelor’s degree from UC Riverside and serves on the Advisory Board for its School of Public Policy.

She previously served on the boards of the UCR Chicano Latino Alumni Association, TruEvolution and Women Wonder Writers. She is also a member of the Human Rights Campaign and The PICK Group of Young Professionals. Before holding elected office, she worked in the private sector alongside community organizations to enhance the local economy, broaden access to quality education and improve access to governmental services. She also served as a district director for a member of the California State Assembly and as director of the California Voter Project.

THE PATH AND THE WORK

Cervantes first won election to the Assembly in November 2016, defeating incumbent Republican Eric Linder for the 60th Assembly District. She served in the Assembly from 2016 through 2024 and represented the 58th Assembly District. In 2019, she became the first member of the California State Legislature to give birth to triplets while serving in office.

Her Assembly assignments included chairing the Committee on Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy and the Select Committee on Veteran Employment and Education. She also served on the committees on Banking and Finance, Communications and Conveyance, and Public Employees and Retirement.

Cervantes is a member of three legislative caucuses: the California Latino Legislative Caucus, the California Legislative Women’s Caucus and the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus. In 2024, after serving in the Assembly from 2016 to 2024, she began serving in the California State Senate.

THE 2025 CLAIM

In May 2025, the Sacramento Police Department cited Cervantes on suspicion of driving under the influence after her car was t-boned by another vehicle. The District Attorney did not pursue charges after laboratory tests showed no measurable presence of drugs or alcohol.

On September 8, 2025, Cervantes filed a claim against the Sacramento Police Department. She accused the department of retaliating against her for sponsoring a bill it did not support and for being LGBTQ and Latina. According to Cervantes, the white woman who hit her was treated differently. Her claim concerned the department’s handling of the incident and an alleged connection to her legislative work.

THE POLICY SIGNATURE

Cervantes’s documented committee assignments included jobs and economic development, veteran employment and education, banking and finance, communications and conveyance, and public employees and retirement. She chaired the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy and the Assembly Select Committee on Veteran Employment and Education.

Veteran employment and education were included in her committee portfolio, as were public employees and retirement. Her private-sector work alongside community organizations sought to enhance the local economy, broaden access to quality education and improve access to governmental services. Her board, organizational and caucus affiliations include Latino, women’s and LGBTQ groups and legislators.
