The 45th Assembly District encompasses the San Bernardino County community of Muscoy and parts of Highland, Fontana, Redlands, Mentone and the city of San Bernardino. James Ramos, a Democrat and a member of the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, currently represents the district in the California State Assembly. Before his election to the Assembly, he served on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors and as a trustee on the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees. His 2018 election carried two distinctions: Ramos became the first Native American elected to the California State Assembly and the first Native Californian elected to the state Legislature.

ROOTS

Born on January 29, 1967, Ramos is a member of the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation. He served on the tribal council before entering elected office.

His service has included the tribal council, the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors and the California State Assembly.

Ramos entered the Assembly with experience on the tribal council and with distinctions tied to his Native identity: the first Native American elected to the Assembly and the first Native Californian elected to the state Legislature.

THE PATH TO OFFICE

Before being elected to the Assembly, Ramos served as a trustee on the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees and on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors.

In November 2018, Ramos was first elected to the California State Assembly after defeating Republican San Bernardino City Councilman Henry Gomez Nickel.
